PRUETT AND DIAZ SALVAGE SIXTH PLACE IN ACTION-PACKED SINGLE-DAY EVENT AT DAYTONA
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (June 30, 2005) -- With practice, qualifying and the 70-lap Brumos Porsche 250 all squeezed into one day on the 3.56-mile Daytona International Speedway infield road course, CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates couldn't predict how Round 7 of the Rolex Sports Car Series would pan out as rain-filled Daytona skies added another tricky element to the race equation. However, after Luis Diaz qualified the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley fourth and turned it over to Scott Pruett on Lap 23, the defending champion battled adversity in the form of lapped traffic and a costly drive-through penalty to finish a respectable sixth.
The event started as the sun faded into the distant pink Daytona Beach horizon, and Diaz managed to keep the team's Lexus-powered Daytona Prototype out of harm's way, turning it over to Pruett after falling slightly to seventh. But the story of the race was fuel mileage, and of the race's four caution periods for 14 laps, the CompUSA squad couldn't pinpoint the strategy that has taken them to Victory Lane twice already this season.
"It was a very complicated race because of how the strategy unfolded with fuel mileage," said Diaz, who with Pruett fell to second in the Team Championship standings (212-205) to SunTrust Racing as the series reaches the halfway point of the 2005 docket. "We were in good shape, but had an incident with a slower GT car that cost us a drive-through penalty when we were on the brink of breaking the top five. After that we got caught up in a few bad situations on track, but I'm proud of the team and the fact that Scott was able to get us back up there."
Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Cort Wagner and Stefan Johansson finished 13th in the Daytona Prototype class in the no.02 New Century Mortgage Lexus-Riley.
