DAYTONA BEACH, FL. -- February 1 -- The #66 The Racer's Group Porsche, with the defending Rolex 24 GT champions Kevin Buckler/Timo Bernhard/Michael Schrom/Jorg Bergmeister driving, held the overall lead at the Rolex 24 for more than five hours despite the f act their car is in the slowest class in the event.

The Northern California team inherited the lead when the #58 Brumos Fabcar powered by Porsche lost its engine during hour six. Earlier, the #59 Brumos entry had fallen back due to a spin by lead driver Hurley Haywood which caused dirt to get inside some o f the race car systems, causing multiple pit stops. Although the Brumos Daytona Prototype can turn faster lap times, it has to pit more often, so it has not been able to catch up so far.

Second in GT and third overall is the #83 Rennwerks Porsche 911 GT3 RS of David Murry/Johannes Van Overbeek/Richard Steranka/David Standridge, while the pole-sitting Multimatic Ford Prototyple has worked its way back to fourth after some early engine probl ems. Third, fourth and fifth places in GT belong to Ferrrari entries, with the #43 Orbit Porsche 911 GT3 RS of Leo Hindery/Peter Baron/Kyle Petty/Marc Lieb, the GT pole sitters, running tenth overall and sixth in GT. The #43 car's latest woes included a broken alternator bracket during Marc Lieb's stint.

DNF's include the #98 Schumacher/Champion Racing Porsche with Sascha Maassen/Lucas Luhr/Martin Snow/Larry Schumacher crashing after Schumacher got a flat tire and crashed at speed on the back straight. Also, the #57 Seikel Porsche caught fire and retired from the race in hour five.
