Dark Dog Saleen earns 5th in class at the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.-Dark Dog Energy Drink finished strong at the 41st Rolex 24 at Daytona as the Dark Dog Konrad Motorsport Saleen S7R finished fifth in the competitive GTS class and 16th overall.
The Dark Dog Saleen team consists of team owner and driver Franz Konrad and drivers Airton Dare, Jean Francois Yvon and Tony Seiler. The four drivers completed 600 laps during the Rolex 24 at Daytona.
During the classic 24-hour endurance at Daytona International Raceway, the Dark Dog Saleen ran as high as first in class and fourth overall. The team lost time in the pits in the first half of the race, and had to work their way back up from 10th in class.
Shortly after sunrise, nineteen hours into the race, the Dark Dog Saleen set the fastest lap of the race so far, with a time of 1:50.650 around the 3.56-mile Daytona road course. The team's fast lap time was not broken until three hours later.
The Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona is one of the most challenging races in the world. Just being able to finish the race is a notable achievement. Drivers and crew members are only able to catch brief naps during the night, and the test of stamina on both man and machine is severe. The Dark Dog Saleen team relied on Dark Dog Energy Drink to help them stay alert throughout the 24 hours.
"I'm happy. The car was good from the beginning," said Konrad. "We showed the car was fast, and we did everything. We had bad luck. Little crashes and breaks in the end. The heat exchanger, that cost us fourth place. But we finished, so we are happy."
Justin Bell, who is one of the Dark Dog Energy Drink drivers, drove with Derhaag Motorsports in a GTS-class Corvette. The team led the class early in the race and was third overall when a drive belt problem forced them to take an extended pit stop. Later in the race the Derhaag Motorsports Corvette again took the GTS lead, but they were finally forced to retire with terminal mechanical problems.
The next race for the Dark Dog Konrad Motorsport Saleen S7R will be the Nextel Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead-Miami Speedway, February 28- March 1. Dark Dog Energy Drink's U.S. headquarters are in Hollywood, Fla., so the team will be aiming for a win at Dark Dog's home track.
