Pilots Pruett and Diaz Pair With Briscoe For Rolex 24
INDIANAPOLIS (February 3, 2005) -- After capturing the 2004 Rolex Sports Car Series crown in fine fashion with four wins and 11 fastest qualifier efforts, Daytona Prototype champion Scott Pruett of CompUSA Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates returns in defense of his title with season-long co-driver Luis Diaz this Saturday in Daytona Beach, FL for the 43rd running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.
Pruett, who was recently selected to serve on the Crown Royal IROC Series' 12-man roster for the eighth time, knows his way around the 3.56-mile road course at Daytona International Speedway having put the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley on the pole last year in record time. The sights and sounds of the 24-hour test of man and machine will be the same, but Pruett looks forward to taking on a new teammate and having the benefit of leading a three-car Ganassi squad into the 63-car endurance extravaganza.
"It's really something to start the season and get ready for the Rolex 24 At Daytona as the defending champion," said Pruett, who will look to extend the team's streak of seven consecutive poles dating back to the 2004 Paul Revere 250 at DIS. "As competitive as this series was last year, it's going to be even stronger this season, and once that green flag drops this weekend, it's anyone's game and titles mean nothing. If you look at the all-star line up for this year's race, it reads like a 'who's who' of racing with champs from past years and all different types of racing. It's going to be an incredible race and certainly a very exciting season. Chip Ganassi has put together a stellar program and we'll continue to build on that every day in order to defend our title as champs."
Luis Diaz joins Pruett in handling the full-time driving responsibilities for the no.01 CompUSA Lexus-Riley entry after steering the team's second 500hp Daytona Prototype to six top-five finishes last season. The Mexico City native will be making his Rolex 24 debut after contesting 11 events on the 12-race docket in 2004 behind the wheel of the no.02 CompUSA Lexus-Riley.
"I am thrilled and so motivated heading into this season and this race," said 28-year-old Diaz, who had 10 top-10 finishes last year. "I learned so much in my first season and I really feel that I can improve on that even more this year, especially working and sharing driving duties with Scott. I take great pride in the confidence Chip Ganassi and CompUSA have shown in me and I'd love to be able to contribute directly in repeating the team's championship again this season."
Completing the lineup for the no.01 machine will be Rolex Series rookie Ryan Briscoe of Australia, who joins the squad for the 24-hour classic before making his IndyCar debut for Chip Ganassi Racing at Homestead-Miami Speedway March 6th.
"While I'd like to treat this as I would any other race, I can't because this is a big deal," said Briscoe, who comes fresh out of the Formula One test driver ranks with Panasonic Toyota Racing into the Stateside motorsports scene. "It'll be my first race in North America, it's a famous race and I'll be in a very competitive car and that's really something to be excited about. I've been talking to my teammates and the engineers and learning a lot these past few days. It's a great opportunity and I hope to make a good contribution."
