FONTANA, Calif. (June 7, 2003) -- Terry Borcheller established a track qualifying record in the Daytona Prototype class at California Speedway today, turning the fastest lap of 1:32.314 seconds at 109.972 mph in his Bell Motorsports #54 Chevy Doran JE4.

"I feel pretty good about the car selection, the team and about a lot of things," Borcheller said after qualifying. "We could easily finish last. We've got good teams, good drivers, good competition and good cars. The way the rules are written it's hard to get an advantage. We knew we were going to be good here."

2003 marks the first year for Prototypes on California's road course.

David Donohue qualified second in the #58 Red Bull Brumos Porsche with a time of 1:33.233 (108.888 mph), nearly one second behind Borcheller.

"When I pulled in, there was brake fluid all over the floor, so the master cylinder must have let go," stated Donohue. "It really didn't effect us (on qualifying), so at least it happened now instead of Sunday at 1:15."

In GTS ranks, Tommy Riggins broke the existing road course track record in the Heritage Motorsports #48 Mustang, turning in a lap at over 107 miles per hour with a time of 1:34.378.

"That's the fastest we've run here. We've been working on the car a lot and have been chasing a few things," Riggins commented. "We ran here last year but didn't run that many laps. We still need to make a few more adjustments."

Riggins split the four Daytona Prototypes and will start third on the inside of row two.

Los Angeles native Cort Wagner pleased the hometown crowd, turning fast lap in the GT class. Wagner's record lap of 1:37.822 seconds at 103.780 mph earned him a $1000 bonus check from the Acxiom Grand Touring Challenge. Wagner is breaking in the Ferrari of Washington team's new #33 Ferrari 360GT.
