Tafel Racing Prepares for Porsche 250
CUMMING, Ga. - The pressure is on as the Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Special Reserve heads to Barber Motorsports Park for the Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant. Tafel Racing is prepared to rise above the pressure and meet the challenge in their quest for the series championship.
Leading the team's three-car effort is the #72 Tafel Racing NEC Porsche GT3 cup driven by Germany's Wolf Henzler and Robin Liddell of England. With their car 2nd in team points, Liddell and Henzler are looking to close that gap at Barber. Although Henzler has not competed there, he began learning its challenges when the team tested there recently. "For me it was the first time at Barber. Therefore, the most important thing was to learn the track and find a setup for the car. The track is multifaced; there are slow corners and faster chicanes."
This was a new track for Liddell also. "I thought the track was beautifully presented and fun to drive too. It has been really well laid out and the attention to detail and landscaping of the circuit in general is second to none. The track itself is fun to drive; twisty and challenging whilst at the same time flowing well with nice gradient change. We also seemed to make some good gains with our development and this will surely put us in a better position during the last three races in order to try and raise our game and win the championship." Liddell and Henzler, who have raced together the entire season and have not finished any further back than 6th, have won 3 races overall and 1 qualifying race.
Eric Lux of Amherst, NY and Ian James of Paradise Valley, AZ will share driving duties in the #74 Tafel Racing Rembrandt Charms Porsche GT3 Cup, which is 6th in team points. James, who won the ALMS P2 championship in 2004, knows the track, having raced there in the Rolex Series during the past two seasons and finishing 3rd in 2005. Lux, currently 5th in driver points, raced at Barber this year in the HSR series as well as gaining valuable experience on the team test days. Eric has had eight top ten finishes this season including his first podium at the Brumos Porsche 250. He will also compete in the Grand-Am Cup 200 in the #175 Tafel Racing Rembrandt Charms Porsche 996.
Through a combination of skill and a lot of hard work, Tafel Racing has all three of its cars in the top ten in team points. Team owner Jim Tafel of Alpharetta, Ga. is paired up with Andrew Davis of Bogart, Ga in the #73 Tafel Racing NEC Porsche GT3 Cup, which is 8th in team points. Davis definitely has the most experience at Barber." I have been a lead instructor for the Porsche Driving Experience since the track opened in 2003. I probably have more laps around the track than just about anybody, so I feel right at home when we visit Barber. I have competed in each Grand-Am event held at the circuit for the last three years. In 2004, I surprised a lot of people with a 3rd place qualifying more effort at my first race in a Daytona Prototype. Our test was very successful; Jim and I logged a tremendous number of laps in the #73 NEC Tafel Racing Porsche. We gathered some very useful data that we can use to better prepare the team for a great run at the end of the month. I was very happy with my teammate Jim Tafel's progress during the test. Barber is a technical circuit and he really shined throughout the day. I am confident that we will be a strong contender for the race." Davis and Tafel finished 8th at Barber in 2005 and Tafel finished 6th there in 2004.
The Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant for the Rolex sports Car Series will be broadcast live on SPEED Channel at 3:00 P.M. ET
