SunTrust Pontiac Riley Qualify in Top Three For the Start of the Porsche 250 at Barber

Birmingham, Alabama (July 30, 2005) - Today's qualifying session for the Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant race at Barber Motorsports Park was shortened from a scheduled 20-minute session to nine minutes due to an accident, leaving the points leading No.10 SunTrust Pontiac Riley Mk.XI of Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli to settle for the third starting spot on the grid.

Max "The Ax" Angelelli was the qualifying driver and turned a fastest time of 1:22.578 at 100.269 mph in four laps. Angelelli has been the fastest on the track most of the weekend and was favored to start on the front row. The front row will consist of first-time pole winner Alex Gurney, driver of the No.99 Gainsco Pontiac Riley with co-driver Bob Stallings. The No. 99 Krohn Racing Pontiac Riley, qualified by Christian Fittipaldi and co-driven by Jorg Bermeister, will start from the second position. Fittipaldi was the only driver to clock a faster time than Angelelli in one of the three practice sessions.

Quotes:

Max Angelelli (starting driver): "Knowing that we have a car that could easily start on the pole, I am pretty upset. Upset with myself and upset because I thought we had twenty minutes to qualify. The twenty minutes disappeared and we planned to run the whole qualifying and they cut the qualifying in half. What can you do?"

Wayne Taylor: "Third is a good place to start. We are ahead of the 01 car, which is one of our major contenders and the 4 car. I really thought Max has been dominate here so far this weekend and really thought that he'd be on the pole, but third is always a good position to start. The main thing is the championship and to stay ahead of our contenders.

Bill Riley: "We were trying to get another run up front again and start on the front row or the pole, but it just didn't work out. Hopefully, we'll have a good race."

Friday Practice Session #1: The SunTrust Racing team was second fastest with a time of 1:22.024 at 100.946 mph with Max Angelelli driving the SunTrust Pontiac Riley Mk.XI.

Friday Practice Session #2: Max Angelelli had the fastest lap with a time of 1:22.610 at 100.120 mph on lap 15.

Saturday Practice Session #3: Max Angelelli again had the fastest lap with a time of 1:21.801 at 101.221 mph on lap 16 making this his best lap for practice sessions this weekend.

The Speed Channel broadcast of the Porsche 250 presented by Bradley Arant will air live on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. ET. The race is a 250 mile/109 lap or 2 ¾ hour time limit.

Tonight the No. 10 SunTrust drivers and team will attend the Grand American Family Appreciation Dinner, hosted by SunTrust Motorsports Banking, at the Barber Motorsports Museum for Grand American drivers and team owners. Following the dinner will be the first annual IPT Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament, a fund raising event for the Boggy Creek Gang Camp and the Barber Motorsports Museum that will pit drivers competing against one another in a different format than usual.
