Practice Sessions with the Spirit of Daytona
The first two hot and humid days at the Barber Motorsports Park has proven to the Spirit of Daytona that hot laps on the track are not always easy to come by. The Pontiac-powered 09 Crawford has taken on the track's twists and turns trying to heat up the tires while watching out for 19 DP and 26 GT cars which sets the stage for a tough race to finish. The Barber track makes for an exciting road racing event for sports car fans and novice spectators to watch and enjoy. The course provides chicanes and ample viewing locations for the spectators but in contrast it creates a challenging and frustrating road race for the drivers.
"I know practicing with both the DP and GT cars helps us get ready for the race on Sunday, but I was very relieved when the track cleared just for the DPs today," said Stephan Gregoire, co-driver of the 09 DP, after a practice day at Barber. "The track was just so crowded and I had to concentrate on driving, taking in the turns, and watching out for 45 other cars. It can just get a bit overwhelming at times." Even with the congestion and the aggressive racing during the sessions the 09 DP had lap times placing in the top ten over the past two days."
Troy Flis, co-owner/ team manager, comments on the sessions, "We are making good use of the practice sessions. Each time the 09 car goes out we are adjusting the DP to make it more efficient. Hopefully we will have made enough improvements during the practice sessions to configure the car perfectly for race day. Gregoire has been great during these sessions because of his feedback. He is very sensitive to the car and gives us excellent commentary which makes it easier for us to adjust the DP." After three days of valuable track time the DP will set out to qualify on Saturday July 29, at 1:15PM for the Porsche 250 at the Barber Motorsports Park.
