Labonte and Cosmo Make Headway at Barber
The much needed cool air did not arrive in time for Bobby Labonte and Guy Cosmo's last practice during the Friday afternoon session at the Barber Motorsports Park. Labonte and Cosmo had two practice sessions under their belt in the 09 MarineMax sponsored Pontiac Crawford during the early to mid-day heat and humidity at Barber. As the last cars were rolling off the track the weather took a break and delivered rain. Before the dampened conditions the teammates were able to adjust to the changes the Prototype went through during their stint at Barber.
"We came here this weekend with something completely new," said Cosmo referring to the new chassis development the 09 Crawford went under. "These sessions have allowed us to be very productive with the car and we are getting very close to having the racecar setup the way we want it to be. Having these changes makes things a little more challenging for us to get the quick laps we want," said Cosmo.
Cosmo was happy with the 09 Pontiac in the morning session. "The car was very comfortable to drive earlier today, I think we need a little more tweaking and then we will have it. But it was difficult driving on the track with all the traffic. I think more of the drivers need to be using their mirrors. On this track there are very few passing zones which makes getting that fast lap even harder," said Cosmo.
Labonte also felt the challenges of traffic. "When there was less traffic I was doing pretty good. When there were more cars out there, it wasn't as easy," said Labonte. When the morning practice session had less traffic, Labonte was able to make headway in the car. "I might be on the brake a little too long but I can see the cars ahead of me and we are at the same pace. I am doing much better now than I was yesterday," said Labonte after his morning stint.
As the heat on track was increasing the Spirit of Daytona Prototype was climbing further up on the time sheet. The two drivers and team took the heat and traffic into consideration and are confident for their afternoon qualifying session on Saturday at 1:30PM.
