Ladies and gentlemen welcome to the press conference for GP3 Race 1 here in Valencia.
GP3 Series: Esteban congratulations, great job today. You took off from the start and had no pressure from behind is the way it looked from our side, but how was it from your point of view?
Esteban Gutierrez: It was quite challenging because it starts from qualifying. I did a mistake and put the car in the wall and the team had to do a really good job. There is a lot of credit going to the team because they were able to fix the car properly.
Of course when you dismantle a car completely you always miss some small details, so at the beginning of the race I was having some problems with the engine so it was challenging with Robert coming from behind and putting pressure in the first few laps. But from the third lap I started to have really good pace, and I just tried to adapt to the situation and in the end i was being a bit conservative because the car was not perfect. But a lot goes to the team because the car finished the race and luckily we are very happy with the result.
GP3 Series: How do you approach an event like this? You know you are on pole and you know you've got a good chance if you get a good start. But you also know there has been some damage to the car that you're not sure about.
Esteban Gutierrez: It's just trying to enjoy the moment and in each circumstance it can be different and it was like a small adventure starting from pole position and not having the car I had in qualifying. But in the end i enjoyed the whole race and tried to adapt in the best possible way.
GP3 Series: And of course a pretty good result for you in the championship.
Esteban Gutierrez: Yes I think it is too early to think if the championship. We have to think of each race one at a time and get the most points possible at each event. Right now we have two points from pole position and ten points for the win and one for the quickest lap so it was good for the championship.
GP3 Series: Robert congratulations. Much like Esteban you had a good start from the lights and followed him through to turn one and stayed there for the remainder of the race.
Robert Wickens: Pretty much yeah. The opening laps I was trying to put as much pressure as possible, but once he found his rhythm he just started pulling a gap. I was trying my hardest but also I was trying to save my tyres in the end and he just got too much of a gap ahead. We also had a bit of an engine problem on the last lap actually and I coasted to the last corner. So it was not ideal and probably could've ended up with extra point, but I'm glad to be back on the podium after Turkey.
GP3 Series: Roberto congratulations. Your first race in GP3 and you are on the podium.
Roberto Merhi: Yes it was my first time in a GP3 race but after the penalty in free practice I had to start in P5 and it was a little bit difficult in the first corner after the crash but I was then fourth. I was pushing hard for the first two laps. I think tomorrow starting from P6 I can finish at the front. Thank you to the team they did a really good job with the car.
GP3 Series: A few guys had a problem at the start, but you seemed to make it look easy. Did you have any prior training to the race?
Roberto Merhi: In Valencia I tried one start, but I didn't think I would be here racing so no not really. I think it is quite easy to start with the hand clutch. I started well today, but tomorrow won't go as well.
GP3 Series: You're in a similar position tomorrow so what are your expectations?
Roberto Merhi: Honestly in the race the GP3 the cars are very quick and it is not like this in Formula 3. For me it was a little bit hard today and I was still learning how to drive the car in the race and tomorrow my goal is to be in the top position and if not on the podium.
