SMITH LOOKING FORWARD TO VALENCIA AFTER POSITIVE GP3 TEST
McLaren Autosport BRDC Award winner Dean Smith made great progress during last week's officially timed two-day GP3 Series test outing in Valencia -- a terrific fillip for the Carlin driver ahead of this coming weekend's fifth and sixth rounds of the 2010 season at the Spanish city's street circuit.
With just a few days remaining until the third GP3 event of the year, which will run as support to the FIA Formula One World Championship's European Grand Prix, the Wolverhampton-based racer was in fine form at Valencia's Circuit Ricardo Tormo -- lapping inside the top three during two of the four test sessions.
On the opening morning, the 22-year-old started well with a highly impressive third fastest time of 1m27.790 seconds. In the afternoon, several red flag stoppages did prevent wholly consistent running but Dean was still within four 10ths of a second of the pace with a best lap of 1m28.283 seconds in baking hot conditions.
The Racing Steps Foundation-backed driver produced his best time of the two days on day two with a time of 1m27.635 in the morning. During the final afternoon, he delivered his second top three performance of the test with a lap of 1m28.147 seconds placing him just nine 100ths of a second shy of the top of the timing screens.
"We tested a lot of different things over the two days, that's why we were up and down the times a little bit", said the BRDC Superstar, "We tried some things which were really positive and others that turned out to be not so good but overall it was a very rewarding test for us.
"We definitely moved some way forward and found something with the set-up which we should be able to refine this weekend. I'm feeling a lot more confident after this latest test, I worked well with the engineers and we're all moving in the right direction. I'm definitely looking forward to fighting for some good results when we're back in Valencia this weekend."
The fifth and sixth rounds of the 2010 GP3 Series will run as support to the European Grand Prix at Valencia's harbour-side street circuit. After practice on Friday, 25th June, qualifying will take place at 08.45 (local time) on Saturday, 26th June, with round five following at 17.20.
The second of the weekend's races will get underway on Sunday, 27th June, at 09.25 and is expected to be screened live in the UK on cable and digital satellite channel British Eurosport -- please check listings for full details.
