The GP3 Series circus arrives in Budapest for a back-to-back race, following Round 5 which took place less than seven days ago in Hockenheim, Germany. The Hungaroring is the scene for Round 6 and once again the stars of the future will be tested to the limits with a twisty and bumpy track, providing a challenge to all to master.
Patric Niederhauser for Jenzer Motorsport was the winner of Race 1 in Hockenheim when he capitalized on calling the right strategy to start the race on wet tires and overtake Conor Daly for victory. Poleman Daniel Abt and Series leader Mitch Evans both made late decisions to start on slicks which compromised their races.
Sunshine awaited Race 2 with Abt passing reverse pole man Evans at the start to take the lead. The safety car was deployed following a first lap incident and when the race got underway again, the Series leader didn’t miss a beat and seized his opportunity to steal back P1. The New Zealander extended his points at the top of the Drivers Standings as the race finished under safety car conditions following an accident for Fabiano Machado.
Evans now holds an 18 point advantage over Lotus GP’s Aaro Vainio with Abt moving up to third as the highest ranked rookie. Niederhauser and Daly are hot on his tail as the fight for the crown heats up. Lotus GP top the Team Standings ahead of MW Arden and Jenzer Motorsport with three rounds remaining.
Jenzer Motorsport welcomes a new face in their camp this weekend with Swiss driver Alex Fontana driving their third car after racing for the Swiss team in Spa last season. Atech CRS GP have Argentine driver Facu Regalia driving for them in Budapest after he had raced with Jenzer in Silverstone.
Once again, there is changeable weather forecast for this weekend’s GP3 races, making it impossible to predict what could happen! The fight is on for the elusive GP3 title and as the season draws to a close, the action will intensify!
