MORAD FASTEST IN RAIN AT HOCKENHEIM
GMH Motorsport-backed driver Daniel Morad continued his strong form by topping the times in the GP3 Series practice session at Hockenheim ahead of this weekend's two races at the German Grand Prix.
The Canadian-Lebanese driver, fresh from winning last time out at Silverstone two weeks ago, proved his wet weather driving skills in GP3's first rain-affected race meeting of the year. With rain falling heavily at first, Morad was immediately a contender, before a mid-session red flag brought an enforced pause. When the cars went back out the rain had abated, and as the track became ever dryer Morad timed his final lap perfectly to set the fastest time, despite a spinning car causing him to lift off the throttle in the final corner.
There were two Status Grand Prix cars in the Top 10 as Robert Wickens posted the 10th fastest time at the end of the session. The Canadian was also consistently competitive throughout the session, in the Top 5 at stages until being knocked back on the final tour as times fell on the drying surface.
Marussia Motors development driver Ivan Lukashevich enjoyed another good session, showing consistency in the challenging conditions. His final lap placed him in 12th position but, as others benefitted from the drying track he was demoted to 19th. He was positive about his performance, though, and was only 0.04sec off championship leader Esteban Gutierrez's best time.
Team manager Simon Cayzer said: "We fulfilled our wet weather programme today, Daniel did a great job and we're pleased with the competitiveness of all the cars going into tomorrow's qualifying."
The Drivers' View
Daniel Morad (LIB): (Position: 1st. Fastest lap: 1m44.68s; Laps: 14).
"I'm pleased to back up my performance at Silverstone with a strong showing here - it shows developing consistency. It was a shame the session was blighted with so many yellows, I know we have more speed to come in these conditions."
Robert Wickens (CAN): (Result: 10th. Fastest lap: 1m45.66s, +0.985s; Laps: 14).
"Overall the session was fairly uneventful and I didn't take too many chances out there. We learnt a lot about the car in wet conditions and I'm confident we'll be competitive in qualifying tomorrow whether it's wet or dry."
Ivan Lukashevich (RUS): (Result: 19th. Fastest lap: 1m46.15s, +1.471s; Laps: 14).
"I really enjoy driving in rainy conditions, and the session went well - we were consistent, didn't make mistakes and we've gathered a lot of data to work on the car overnight before qualifying."
