JOSEF NEWGARDEN TO START FROM POLE

Josef Newgarden will start today's race from pole position, after an eventful qualifying session in the fiercely competitive GP3 Series, at the Hockenheim circuit in Germany.

It was a wet but drying track that greeted the drivers this morning, and despite not having driven on the circuit before yesterday's practice, Newgarden was quick from the onset.

The Carlin driver was third fastest at the end of the 30-minute qualifying session, however provisional pole sitter James Jakes (Manor Racing) and second-quickest driver Robert Wickens (Status Grand Prix) were two of the 21 entrants due to be penalized following Friday's practice. Overnight deliberations by the stewards led to two-thirds of the field being dealt a penalty for setting their fastest time under double-waved yellows. Jakes and Wickens were both handed a two-place grid drop, and Newgarden's consistency and speed has therefore ensured he will start race one at Hockenheim from pole.

Speaking about the result, Newgarden said: "I'm really pleased with our pace around here - we were quick yesterday though the timing sheets didn't really reflect that, so I knew we had a shot at qualifying up at the front today. Regardless of whether it's a wet or dry race, I'm confident of a strong result this afternoon."

Race one is scheduled to get underway later today at 17:20 local time.
