MORE PAIN IN SPAIN
MW Arden has completed its first active weekend as a race team -- but the second GP3 Series event at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya reaped little reward. Miki Monras ran on the fringes of the top 10 during the opening stages, but was then handed a drive-through penalty for failing to slow sufficiently where yellow warning flags were being displayed. To compound his error, he was then handed another penalty for breaking the pit lane speed limit and that dropped him to 23rd.
It was a chaotic race, with the Safety Car deployed in the wake of a spectacular startline collision, but Leonardo Cordeiro and Michael Christensen stayed out of trouble to finish 12th and 18th.
Michael: "It hasn't been a great weekend and it was tough starting from the back today. I managed to pass a couple of cars after the Safety Car restart, but unless the driver ahead makes a mistake it isn't easy to overtake here. It has been a frustrating weekend in many ways -- and after only getting one lap yesterday it was hard to know what to do about set-up. Today's mileage has been useful, however, and I am encouraged that we have enough pace to be competitive. I look forward to proving as much in Istanbul."
Leonardo: "That was a pretty good race and it went according to plan. I promised to be more aggressive today and I gained three places at the start, then kept on pushing all the way to the end. I moved up to 12th as a consequence of others being penalised and I'm happy enough with the result.
"The car is hard to drive at times because you pick up a lot of understeer when following other drivers closely, but I have learned a lot throughout the weekend and will be much better prepared for Istanbul."
Miki: "That was not an easy race. I stalled briefly on the grid but managed to get going again and didn't lose too many positions. I was able to follow other cars closely after the Safety Car pulled in but, like my team-mates, I found it very difficult to overtake around this circuit. My penalties meant there was no chance of a reasonable finish, but I come away from here knowing that we have the basis of a quick car. There is a long way to go in the championship and I'm confident we'll be competitive for the rest of the season."
