NEWGARDEN COMPLETES TOUGH WEEKEND IN BARCELONA

After enduring a tough start to the 2010 season, Josef Newgarden finished the second race from the opening GP3 event at Barcelona in 16th position.

Newgarden's woes had continued after race one, when the Carlin driver was handed a ten place grid drop after being penalised for causing a collision with Felipe Guimaraes (Addax Team). Consequently, Newgarden was forced to line-up on the back row of the grid for the start of race two.

Newgarden had it all to do, and hoped to carve his way through the field, but his grid slot was going to make it difficult to make an impression on the front-runners. After a great start and a couple of brave overtaking manoeuvres, the American had made good progress by mid-race. Benefiting further from drive-through penalties that were handed out to a couple of his rivals ahead of him, Newgarden finally finished the race in 16th place.

Remaining upbeat about the situation, Newgarden said: "I did what I could in the race this morning, and I'm pleased we finished with a decent result. Obviously, this weekend was not what I'd hoped for, but it happens, and we'll just be looking for much stronger results when we head to the next round."

Carlin's Racing Director, Trevor Carlin, spoke of the team's performance: "I think we proved this weekend that we have a very good car and I'm very confident about the season ahead."

Newgarden will be back in action on 28 - 30 May in Turkey, as the second GP3 event gets underway at the Istanbul circuit, in three weeks time.
