The first ever race of the new GP3 series, running as a feeder programme to GP2 this year, at every round except Monaco, has just ended at the Catalunya circuit. Among the thirty drivers taking part was Mirko Bortolotti, one of the five young talents selected by the Ferrari Driver Academy. He showed great spirit despite the bad accident he suffered yesterday when he went off the track, on his debut for the Spanish Barwa Addax Team. Because of severe bruising to the right hand sustained in free practice, the twenty year old from Trento was forbidden by the medical commission from taking part in qualifying. He therefore had to start from the back of the grid and nevertheless managed to climb up to sixteenth place, lapping in the same times as the leaders. Now the youngster will tackle the second race, which gets underway tomorrow morning at 9.25.
