ALEXANDER SIMS SIGNS WITH STATUS GRAND PRIX GP3 TEAM FOR 2011
British racing driver Alexander Sims has today been confirmed as a driver for the Status Grand Prix GP3 team for the 2011 season. Alexander joins the Silverstone-based team on the back of a strong season in F3 Euroseries where he finished the year in fourth place in the Championship.
Founded in 2005, Status Grand Prix already has an enviable record in motor racing, having secured a second place in the 2010 GP3 Championship and winning the A1 GP World Cup of motorsport in 2009.
In October, Alexander underwent a successful test with the Status Grand Prix team in Jerez where he posted the third fastest time of the test. Alexander will spend the next six weeks working closely with the team in preparation for the first GP3 test of the 2011 season at Paul Ricard on the 3rd and 4th March. Following three tests across March and April, Alexander and the Status Grand Prix will kick start their challenge for the GP3 Championship in Istanbul, Turkey on the 7th May.
Entering its second season, the GP3 Series will once again support the Formula One World Championship and will run alongside the GP2 Series. The Series will see Alexander compete in sixteen races at eight events across Europe (with races in Monaco still awaiting confirmation) at some of the world's most famous and challenging race circuits.
Teddy Yip, Status Grand Prix Team Principal commented; "We are delighted that Status Grand Prix has the opportunity to work with people of the calibre of Alexander and Gravity Sport Management. Following on from finishing second in last year's GP3 Championship, every effort is being made to again battle for the title, and having top drivers such as Alexander in the team is a crucial part of that. He will fit into the team very well."
Simon Cayzer, Status Grand Prix Team Manager commented; "Although Alexander only did one day of testing with us this autumn, we were immediately impressed. He knows what he wants from a car to be fast, he is confident, consistent and quick. We have every confidence that he can win the GP3 championship."
Alexander Sims commented; "I am thrilled to be racing in GP3 with Status Grand Prix. Although I only spent one day testing with them, it was immediately clear that they are an extremely professional and ambitious team, and I am really looking forward to working with them. They had a fantastic first season in GP3 and I will be working hard to give them reason to celebrate again in 2011."
