PIC ON THE PACE AGAIN IN MEDITERRANEAN HEAT
Charles Pic might not have scored a championship point since winning last month's opening GP2 Series race of the season, in Barcelona, but he is well placed to end that run of bad luck after another stirring qualifying performance. The Frenchman has qualified seventh for tomorrow's 32-lap race around the gruelling, 3.367-mile Valencia street circuit. Like Mediterranean counterpart Monaco, the venue features a plethora of corners -- 25 in all -- but it also has several long straights and, for the most part, ample run-off areas.
While Pic contemplates a start from the sharp end of the grid on his first visit to Valencia, team-mate Rodolfo Gonzalez struggled to adapt to an unfamiliar circuit and will line up 22nd.
"I was sixth fastest in free practice, which wasn't too bad -- particularly as I spent most of the session learning the circuit. The car felt good this morning and we tried to make some small improvements before qualifying, but we probably took a small step in the wrong direction because the car didn't feel quite as well balanced. In the circumstances, I'm quite happy with seventh and we'll go back to square one before the race. This has been a good start to the weekend, though, and I believe we can definitely score a few points tomorrow."
"I opted to use Charles's set-up, which clearly works quite well, but I was unable to extract as much from it as he did. Still I am 1.6 seconds off p1, which is my closest this season yet.I don't know this circuit and I'm still coming to terms with the car, but this season I have to look at every race weekend as a chance to gain valuable experience. The lap time tells its own tale, but on the positive side I'll be learning yet another new circuit -- and generally this year I tend to have fared better in races than I have in qualifying."
