Sergio Perez put in a stellar qualifying performance ahead of this weekend's GP2 Series double-header through the streets of Valencia, Spain. Despite never having seen the portside circuit before, the Mexican conjured a 1m 45.669s lap to annexe fourth place on the grid, behind title contenders Nico Hulkenberg (ART), Vitaly Petrov (Barwa Addax) and Lucas di Grassi (Racing Engineering).

Team-mate Edoardo Mortara also performed well in the relentless heat, but was frustrated to qualify only 13th, right in the middle of the closely matched grid.

Today's session was interrupted for several minutes after Luca Filippi (Super Nova) crashed heavily at Turn 20. The Italian was uninjured, but the circuit was littered with debris after he hit the tyre wall at high speed.

Sergio: "Today has been extremely encouraging. The car was well balanced and that gave me confidence to attack the circuit. Fourth is obviously a good result, but we had the potential to take pole position and I will definitely be pushing for a win tomorrow.

"During the week I spent time on the team's new racing simulator -- a very good experience that really helped me to prepare for an unfamiliar circuit. Since the start of the season I feel I have been getting better all the time and I believe today's performance gives us a good platform on which to build for the rest of the season."

Edoardo: "I don't know what to say, really. We tried a number of set-up changes to tailor the car to my driving style for this circuit, but we didn't manage to get it quite right. The car was neither good nor bad, really, but I feel I should definitely have done better than 13th. It was a bit of a so-so session, and quite frustrating, but it's a better starting position than some I've had recently, so I hope I'll be able to convert it into a positive result tomorrow."
