Trident Racing race 2 report

Asia: Imola

The 2011 GP2 Asia Series hit its final race today at Imola. The closing race of the weekend proved less lucky than expected for the Trident Racing duo. Both drivers were faultlessly forced to retire despite the huge potential showed, failing to achieve some well-deserved positive results. Stefano Coletti was off to a great start, and even challenged the leading car of Dani Clos in the very early stages.

While he was making his way into the first corner though, he was hit hard by the following car, and suffered from the loss of his rear wing. He was forced back to the pits, where he retired shortly after.

Rodolfo Gonzales did a great start too, as he claimed several spots back right away. He kept 6th for quite some time, controlling the attacks of Ericsson and Herck, who followed him. On lap 15, he was suddenly stopped by a gearbox issue that put him out of contention.

Despite the bad break suffered, Coletti ended up the 2011 season in 4th place and was the best rookie in standings. Trident Racing captured 4th place too in the team's standings. The GP2 circus is now ready to refocus on the upcoming GP2 Main Series, set for its first pre-season test of 2011 on April 5, 6 at Silverstone.

Rodolfo Gonzalez (DNF) “The start has been quite chaotic, but fortunately I escaped the crash at the first corner. The first laps have not been easy, because I struggled to warm my rear tires. Then I set a fast and consistent pace, increasing my margin over the following drivers. It meant a lot to me, because it showed that we did a good job over the weekend. It's a pity for the technical issue that prevented me to end up into the points, but I'm confidently looking forward to the Main Series season.”

Stefano Coletti (DNF) “I think I did a great start, because I almost challenged Clos for the lead. I decided to hold the inside line for the first corner, in order to pass Clos who was on the right side. Then I received a big hit and lost my rear wing. It's a pity because I could have tried to pass Clos to win the race and third place would have been enough to end up in 3rd place in standings.”
