The second and final round of the 2011 GP2 Asia Series kicked-off today at Imola. Trident Racing fielded the team's two regulars, Stefano Coletti and Rodolfo Gonzalez. At the end of qualifying, Coletti captured 16th place on the grid for tomorrow's Race 1, while Gonzalez ended up in 17th.
The overall performance turned out to be less than expected, but both Coletti and Gonzalez are eager to recover on race day like happened at Abu Dhabi, thanks to a really competitive race pace. The 35-lap race 1 will be taking off at 14:00 with live TV coverage will be provided in Italy by Rai Sport 2. Race 2 is scheduled for Sunday at 14:00.
Stefano Coletti, 16th (1:28.194) "First of all, I want to say that traffic has been an incredibly huge issue during today's Qualifying. There were slowing drivers even in some very fast zones, and that created some dangerous situations for everyone else. After having scored the fourth fastest laptime in practice, I expected to keep the same pace in qualifying, bu we experienced the same issue of Abu Dhabi. On new tires, we don't improve our laptimes like others do. It won't be easy tomorrow, but I hope to recover some spots counting on the track's layout which offers some good passing opportunities."
Rodolfo Gonzalez, 17th (1:28.310) "I'm extremely happy to have clocked a laptime close to Stefano's best one, but in general I'm sorry that, like happened at Abu Dhabi, we couldn't use our full potential in qualifying like we do on race day. We're definitely competitive on used tires, but once on new tires I struggle to push the front tires to the right temperature. As it turns out, laptimes don't improve as much as we expect. We'll see if we'll be able to recover some spot on race day tomorrow."
