In the first race of 2011 GP2 Main Series, Trident Racing captured a valuable top-5 spot thanks to a great comeback race by Stefano Coletti. Rodolfo Gonzalez wasn't equally lucky. The Venezuelan was forced to retire at lap 17 due to gearbox issues.
Coletti started in 15th place, and regained three spots during the opening lap. After a fiery crash happened on lap 1, the race was neutralized with a full-course yellow for four laps as the stewards deployed the Safety-Car.
Trident Racing then opted for an early stop on lap 8, and once back on-track Stefano started to clock some extremely fast laptimes. In addition to several great overtaking moves, he quickly made his way up the charts and once all the pit-stops were completed, he was running in 5th and held the same spot to the finish.
Following today's results, Stefano will take-off from 4th place of race 2's grid, while Gonzalez is set for a spot on row 10. The closing race of the weekend will kick-off at 11:35 local time, on a 23-lap distance. RAI 2 will provide live broadcast of the event on the Italian territory starting at 10:30 CET.
Stefano Coletti, 5.
“My start today hasn't been one of the luckiest. The car I had in front was off to a slow start, and that slowed me down too. The early pit-stop proved as the right move for us, because when I went back on-track I lapped really fast and recovered a lot of spots. The final few laps have been really demanding, because my tires were wearing out and keeping the car on-track wasn't easy. I'm satisfied with my race because I didn't make mistake and I cruised to what I consider a well-deserved result for both me and the team. Now I hope to round out the weekend with a good run on race 2”.
Rodolfo Gonzalez, DNF.
“My weekend so far has been one to forget. I managed to make it through the first-lap mayhem and I hoped to fight back through the race. A gearbox issue then brought my day to an end. I need to move forward and focus on tomorrow's race 2.”
