Circuit de Monaco
As expected in qualifying today, traffic was the key factor for allowing drivers to post a good lap time. Luca was one of the fastest cars on the circuit and went up into P1 once he found a clean lap - this was short-lived, however, as he lost control of his car in sector one of the next lap and clipped the barriers, ending his qualifying session. All Luca could do is wait to see what the other drivers could do and, with a number of incidents on track, he was fortunate to only drop down to P11.
Unfortunately Fairuz was unable to find a clear lap at the beginning of the session and with the incidents mentioned above encountered either a yellow flag, or traffic, on every lap. The race tomorrow will be one of attrition, but with the Monaco circuit being notoriously difficult to overtake at, the Super Nova team will have to push hard to get into the points tomorrow. The stewards will also be busy after such an eventful qualifying, so there may be some change in positions before tomorrow.
Fairuz Fauzy - P22
“It has been a disappointing day for us, I have just struggled to find a clear lap all day. It is especially difficult with 26 cars running this year, but I know it is the same for everyone. Some people are lucky and some not but for me it did not happen, even though the car felt good and I think I only managed to get one clear lap.
I think in the race tomorrow it will be very important to keep the car on track and stay out of trouble, to allow us to move up the field. It is going to be a challenge for me to get up to P8 and a good starting position for tomorrow. For sure the first corner will be very difficult, as we have seen here in the past, so I think if we can get through that then anything can happen.”
Luca Filippi - P11
“I am very sorry for the team today, I was very happy with my car, it felt good and I was comfortable and believe i had a car for pole position today. My first push lap we went to the top of the times and i had more to come but sadly the next lap i made a small mistake and touched the wall, damaging my car and ending my session. It was a huge shame as the session continued the track improved and in the last 5 to 6 minutes we dropped down to P11. It was a big shame as the car was great and i feel very comfortable around monaco and i really wanted to make the pole position. So now we have to look forward to tomorrow’s race, i believe we will be fast and hope we can have a good result.”
David Sears – Team Principal
“We were hoping for a front row grid slot for Luca today and he was fast enough to do that but unfortunately clipped the armco barrier after turn one and eliminated himself after a third of the session, at which time he was P2. He then slipped down to P11, which may improve due to potential penalties to the drivers in front.
Fairuz found it difficult to get a clear lap and just to indicate how bad the traffic was, championship favourite Romain Grosjean will be starting last. Fairuz is obviously disappointed but he knows the pace was there to be much higher on the grid.”
