Maldonado and D'Ambrosio discuss their great race
GP2 Series: Pastor, an amazing drive by you today to take your first win of the season, and overtook a lot of guys on the way to do it: how satisfying was that for you?
Pastor Maldonado: Yeah it was really satisfying because the race was really really difficult: rain at the beginning, rain at the end, so I was looking to stay on the track and watch the people in front of me, and I saw they were so slow and my pace was unbelievable today. We improved the car so much from yesterday a little bit, and it was really constant. In the rain I just stayed on the circuit and then in the end I could really push a lot, and I was incredibly quick on the straights. We decided to go completely to the dry set up to be quick on the straight lines and to overtake, and I was a little bit worried because of the rain, because very low downforce in the rain is so difficult. I tried to not lose in the second sector, to keep the same gap, and after in the first sector and the third one I was incredibly quick.
GP2 Series: The move came on the last lap on D'Ambrosio on the top straight, and it looked like it was starting to rain: how was that?
Pastor: Yeah, really difficult. At the end it started to rain at some corners but not at all of them, so it was very difficult to understand the situation very well because some corners were good, some corners not. I decided just to be very careful, and when I saw three laps remaining I decided to push because I saw D'Ambrosio not looking so quick, he lifted a little bit because of the rain, and I saw I had a better pace and I thought the last lap is my lap: I got with him at Eau Rouge and then after that, easy. I got a very good slipstream, really good!
GP2 Series: To take a win at last after so much disappointment must be great for you and the boys: how are the team?
Pastor: For me and for the team I am really happy, because we worked really hard for the championship this season and now we are fighting a bit in the championship again. Monza is going to be very good for us because it's one of my favourite circuits, like here, and I think we will be in the top again there, for sure.
GP2 Series: Jerome, a fantastic drive by you at your home circuit, very nearly a win but it wasn't to be: I guess you may be slightly disappointed, but how was the race for you?
Jerome D'Ambrosio: Like you say, well, I'm happy: I'm happy because we are second here after a disappointing qualifying, we came back yesterday and had a good race so starting from pole today we were one of the fastest today, apart from Pastor who was simply faster than everybody else and he overtook me, which was very fair and there is nothing much else to say about that. I have mixed feelings because I am happy, and we have to be happy about second in the race and progressing. improving all the time, so I hope the team are just going to enjoy tonight. There is a little bit of disappointment, but I take that disappointment as a positive because everybody believes we can do it, we can win, so we just have to continue pushing. I'm just taking it as a positive thing, that's what I'm trying to do, and keep on working.
GP2 Series: It was an unusual start because of the weather: what happened from your view?
Jerome: It was, really: it was really difficult, especially because when you are leading you don't know what to expect. I knew that some corners would be more slippery than others, and I had a great start, did it safely at the first hairpin and then took more risk at Eau Rouge just to build a lead over Soucek and was on the limit at Les Combes. Difficult race because of the changing conditions and leading the race, but it was okay.
GP2 Series: You've really turned your season around from the beginning of the year...
Jerome: Yeah, since Hockenheim we've reached another level, we have taken another step: we needed to do one to fight for a podium and done a lot of good work since Hockenheim, and in Hungary we should have been in the top 8 in the first race and were really fast in the second race, and since Valencia we have been always in the points. This is good: 2 podiums and we just have to keep it up and work hard.
