ONE-TWO AND FASTEST LAP FOR BARWA ADDAX TEAM IN SPA.

SERGIO PEREZ 1st
GIEDO VAN DER GARDE 2nd

The Spanish Barwa Addax Team have achieved the best possible result in the second GP2 Series race at the Belgian circuit of Spa Francorchamps, with the drivers finishing first and second and setting the fastest race lap time. Sergio Perez took victory and Giedo van der Garde finished in second position.

Sergio Perez, started from second position on the grid and made a more conservative start than normal because the track was slippery at the end of the first straight, but it wasn't long before he forced his way magnificently into first place and from then on he dominated the race until the end. Perez pulled away from his rivals but various safety cars meant that he lost important advantages. He never lost his composure and he was able to pull away each time and even set the fastest lap time on the last lap. Sergio Perez showed throughout the whole race that he was at another level and that it is easy to understand why the top teams in F1 are interested in his services.

Giedo van der Garde drove possibly the best race of his carreer. Starting from 9th on the grid, he made a spectacular fightback producing some of the best overtakes of the weekend, particularly the one where he passed Gonzalez with three cars side by side at the point of braking. It reminded many of us the great moment Hakkinen produced on the same section some years ago, which is considered as one of the best overtakes in the history of Formula 1. Giedo won the battle as he held off the challenge of his two rivals and was later on the brakes, choosing the best line into the corner to take the spoils. Later he tried to pressure his team-mate and was able to hold off the late attacks from veteran driver Parente, who made a great return to GP2 this weekend in Belgium.

Barwa Addax Team, in the race for the team title, have reduced the difference of 20 points, thanks to the 12 picked up today and are now ready to challenge for the championship. Having scored the maximum number of points possible, including the fastest lap time by Sergio Perez, have reduced the difference to just 8 points. With still two events to go the team is breathing down the neck of the team leaders. Furthermore Barwa Addax Team has pulled away from their closest rivals and have increased the difference to 34 points.

Sergio Perez keeps alive his faint hopes of winning the driver's championship. He is the only driver with any chance. But whatever happens from now until the end of the season, Sergio Perez along with Maldonado have shown that they are at a different level to the rest in GP2. They should be fighting it out for the championship to the wire and are without doubt the two main candidates for a Formula 1 drive next season.

Giedo van der Garde moves up to fourth overall in the driver's championship. He has consolidated his position among the leading drivers in the field and in addition has won valuable points for the team, in the race for the constructor's title.

The last but one event will take place at the Italian circuit of Monza as part of the Formula weekend from the 10th to the 12th of September.
