IMOLA, RACE 2: POINTS FINISH FOR HERCK, FILIPPI GRABS TOP TEN
Scuderia Coloni closed a very satisfying GP2 Asia weekend in Imola, confirming its competitiveness with two great races by Michael Herck and Luca Filippi. The Romanian driver, who was 5th on the grid after yesterday’s 4th place, didn’t have the best start and closed the first lap in 8th position, behind Gonzalez and Ericsson. Anyway, he had a much better pace compared to his rivals and started making pressure on them: on lap 4 he made the most of a mistake by Ericsson, passing him for P7, and then he climbed to sixth place when Gonzalez was forced off track by a technical gremlin. A penalty issued to Grosjean after the race for cutting the track promoted him to P5, meaning two valuable points for the team.
Filippi, who was starting from P22, was amazing off the line and then managed to find the right gaps in the first corners, passing eight drivers and closing the first lap in P14. Being much quicker than his rivals, Luca passed Berthon on lap 5, doing the same with Ceccotto on lap 19. From then on he sticked to Kral’s rear wing but without having the right chance to overtake him and closing in P10.
Paolo Coloni: “From a performance standpoint it was undoubtedly a good weekend for us. Michael was among the quickest of the pack for the whole weekend, and he drove two very good races bringing home some valuable points. Luca, meanwhile, showed that with a proper qualifying he would have been able to challange for a win. Anyway, we’re happy to see that we are one of the most competitive teams on the GP2 grid, there was no better way to get ourselves ready for the Main Series that will start with the Silverstone testing in a few weeks. We are evaluating various drivers for our second car, and soon we’ll make a decision in order to complete our line-up in the best possible way”.
Michael Herck: “I don’t know what happened at the start, I had a lot of wheelspin even if I did put a lot of attention in warming the tyres. Anyway apart from this the race was good, the performance of the car was great and the weekend was a good training for our Main Series duties. We have a very competitive car, now working on some details we can hit the big target”.
Luca Filippi: “I had a great start, finding the right line through traffic in the first lap. The car was really quick as it was yesterday, and the race was good fun with some good passing moves, even if in Imola it’s not easy. Losing the qualifying session was a pity, my pace was good for a win and that would have been the best way to say thanks to Scuderia Coloni for this chance”.
