Top Ten For Rigon And Scuderia Coloni
A top ten finish with Davide Rigon, while starting from P16, was a good way to take on the 2011 GP2 Main Series campaign for Scuderia Coloni in Istanbul.
Davide, who emerged as the best placed Italian driver in today’s Race 1, boasted some very good race management skills as he avoided the first lap crash between Chilton and Leimer and took advantage from the following chaos gaining two places. Then the team decided for an early pit-stop (on lap 9) and the strategy proved to be right, giving Rigon the chance to show on a stunning pace in the central part of the race, recovering some positions and being in the condition to attack and pass both Vietoris and Valsecchi on lap 20.
This meant P9 for Davide, who started a fierce fight with Ericsson for 8th place and tomorrow’s pole position. The pair raced head to head for many laps, forcing Rigon to ask too much from his tyres: the subsequent drop in performance during the last few laps meant that Davide had to settle for P10, a very good result anyway.
Also Michael Herck made a very good recovery, closing in P14 after starting from 10th row of the grid. The best part of his race was the final one, when lapping averagely 1” quicker than his direct rivals he closed the gap and then passed both Varhaug and Leal. Thanks to this great performance he clinched P14 despite having to serve a drive-through penalty for speeding in pit-lane, and looking to the gaps at the end of the race a top 8 finish would have been possible without that.
Michael Herck: “I’m very disappointed because with a little mistake, just braking a bit too late at the pit-lane entrance, I wasted a great race. Anyway I want to be positive: looking at the final result, without that mistake a top 8 finish would have been in reach despite starting from P20, and this means that we are among the quickest out there. The car was good, I felt confident, and I’m also satisfied about how we managed the tyre wear. Working like this there’s no doubt that good results will come soon”.
Davide Rigon: “We did a really good job, we had a good pace and at a certain point of the race I was pretty sure that 8th place and the pole for tomorrow was going to be mine. Then the tyre performance dropped suddenly and I had to back off a bit; you know, a great recovery was my only option for this race, but to do this I had to put a lot of pressure on the tyres, so what happened is normal. Anyway we had a great pace, we didn’t have any issue and we gathered a lot of data, so we can be pretty satisfied”.
