ABU DHABI, TEST DAY 4: QUAIFE-HOBBS AND CHANDHOK CLOSED THE GP2/08 ERA FOR SCUDERIA COLONI
With the last day of testing in Abu Dhabi, Scuderia Coloni hailed the very last laps of the GP2/08 car in the best possible way, being again one of the quickest teams on track.
With the driving duties assigned to Adrian Quaife-Hobbs, at his second day of testing with the team, and to Karun Chandhok, test driver for Hispania Racing in 2010, the team went through its testing programme without a single glitch, boasting very good performances.
Confirming the good impressions from yesterday, Quaife-Hobbs was always among the best drivers, especially in the morning when on used tyres he got third place thanks to a 1'47"961. Also in the afternoon his pace was very good but in his best lap on fresh rubber, with a very good first sector and a record in Sector 2, he was slowed down by traffic in S3, improving anyway to 1'47"925.
It was a fruitful session also for Karun Chandhok: the driver from Chennai, India, had both to learn the track and to adapt to the driving style of the GP2 car, slightly different from the F1 he's used to, so he focused on learning and getting as many miles as possible under his belt. His best time of the day was 1'48"535, with a good improvement from the morning to the afternoon as a proof of the good job done with the team.
Paolo Coloni: "I'm really happy for the outcome of this four days of testing. We were often among the quickest and the team did a very good job with all the drivers. I'm very pleased by the performances of the young talents who drove with us, and I was surprised by how quickly the rookies were able to find a very good pace. I think that this shows that GP3 prepares them really well, and trust me, choosing the driver for next season among all the talented ones we've seen in this test won't be an easy task.
"Besides this, I was happy to see that Micheal Herck, our driver for next season, was in the top spots in every session. We're happy to see that he's in very good shape".
Adrian Quaife-Hobbs: "We had a very good morning which showed just how much i had learnt from Day 1 and resulted in us finishing 3rd, less than 0.05 away from pole. On my fastest lap i also had a mistake which cost me more time than the gap to pole position so I was very happy.
"I was also pleased with my pace on fresh tyres in the afternoon where I did my fastest overall time. It's a pity I didn't improve on new tyres due to circumstances otherwise i am sure we would have been challenging near the top again like the morning".
Karun Chandhok: "I'm happy to have had the chance to join my old friends at Scuderia Coloni and drive a GP2 car again. It was a useful day for me to learn the circuit and also get a bit more race fit as I haven't done a race in a while. The GP2 car is a bit different to the F1 car obviously and it took me a while to adapt my style, but in the end it was a very fruitful day".
