The Trophy is awarded for the 'Most Meritorious Performance by a British Driver in Single-Seater Racing' and was given to Sam in recognition of his achievements in GP2 Series this season.

Sam finished runner-up in the Championship, narrowly missing out on the title after achieving five race wins, the most of any driver. He also secured the Teams’ Title for debutant team RUSSIAN TIME.

Previous recipients of the Graham Hill Trophy include Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button and Dario Franchitti.

Receiving his trophy, Bird said: “I am very proud to have been chosen by the BRDC to receive this award. It is a true honour to join the list of illustrious names that have held this Trophy before me.”
