Victory in race one of the GP2 Series Circuit de Catalunya event belonged to Alexandre Premat after a thrilling battle with his teammate, Lewis Hamilton, in a breath-taking last lap of the competition.
Third position went to the German racer from Arden International, Michael Ammermuller, who achieved his third podium of the season.
Hamilton took over the lead of the race after Nelson A. Piquet was forced to take a drive-through penalty, and the Brit looked to have his third win wrapped up.
However, Premat had different ideas, and after catching his teammate he made an audacious attempt for the lead on the final lap. The pair touched, Hamilton spun, and the Frenchman ran home victorious ahead of his teammate in second after all.
"I need to move back to Lewis and Nelsinho in the championship, to win a lot of races and hopefully then win the championship. I'm sorry for Lewis because he had a good race, but I think I was much faster at the end... so I am very happy with this result", the Frenchman stated.
It was the second podium for Premat in the season; his first came one week ago in the Nurburgring race one.
Hamilton was able to continue in the race and achieved strong points in his aim for the championship battle.
"This is racing, and fortunately I managed to get second. I was lucky because I just managed to keep the motor running, and to get points which is the most important thing for me and for the team", Hamilton commented.
Ammermuller gathered another podium finish this season in another great performance for the rookie German driver.
"I got stuck at the start, cause I was at the wrong place at the wrong time. Afterwards, it all went very well - we had good tactics and a good pit stop. Towards the end of the race, I was able to keep off (Cilvio) Piccione and I am very happy about my third podium", mentioned Ammermuller.
It was a disappointing result for Piquet as he had looked set for his second win of the season until he was given a drive-through penalty for speeding in the pitlane, although he made a fantastic recovery and a great race to finish in fourth.
"Obviously I'm really disappointed because I wanted the win, and with the times we were doing, we would have done it quite easily. But we got the drive through so we have to be happy with the result that we got, especially as I was really scared that we wouldn't finish the race because we had gear selection problems towards the end", the Brazilean said.
The standings now shows Piquet and Hamilton tied with 34 points each in a fantastic head-to-head battle for the title. The 20-year-old from Piquet Sports knows the fight will be long and hard.
"I know that the championship is going to be really tight between me and Lewis this year, and now we are at the top on the same points, and I think it's going to be an interesting fight this year", said Piquet.
Points places were completed with Ferdinando Monfardini followed by Tristan Gommendy, Alexandre Negrao and Olivier Pla, who will start tomorrow`s sprint race from the pole position.
