VITALY PETROV POLE YET AGAIN. DAVIDE VALSECCHI FIFTH
BARWA ADDAX TEAM HAVE BOTH DRIVERS IN THE TOP FIVE IN AN ATTEMPT TO TAKE THE TEAM TITLE.
Vitaly Petrov, once again, will start from pole position for tomorrow's first GP2 Series race, after the official qualifiers which took place this afternoon at the Portimao circuit in the Portuguese Algarve. His team mate, Davide Valsecchi, this time showed signs of his true potential, as he finished the session in a magnificent fifth place. Team Principal Alejandro Agag had promised that "they will fight right to the very end in an effort to win the title". Nevertheless they are guaranteed the runners up position in the final overall rankings of the GP2 Series team championship.
It was, however, Davide who started the qualification session among the leading times. But once more Vitaly showed that he is in a tremendous vein of form as, lap by lap, he started to improve on his best lap times until setting the fastest lap in the latter stages of the session. Nobody was able to improve on his impressive 1.30.819 which means the Russian driver stretches his lead over the third placed driver in the driver's championship, by two points, consolidating his runners up position. He more than deserves this after his consistent performances this season. Petrov has recovered well from the terrible infection which caused him so many problems last week in Monza. It has to be said that he has been very well looked after all week by his nurse in Valencia, Lourdes.
Valsecchi wants to demonstrate, here in Portimao, that he has improved after his work with the Barwa Addax Team. He finished the qualification session in a very creditable fifth position which places him wihin the elite of this very competitive class and was only behind the very best, who are fighting it out for the main honours in this season's championship. According to his engineer, Davide is feeling more and more comfortable with both car and team. The circuit is also to his liking because it is very technical and it really suits his style of driving.
Barwa Addax Team are keeping their championship hopes alive. Everything is set up for an exciting finale as the Spanish team fight for the constructor's title, while they still have a mathematic chance. The team is working very hard and they are very united. They would like to finish the season on a high note, maintaining the level of performance they have shown all season. The lead in the race for the team title has been reduced by two points, thanks to the pole position of Vitaly Petrov. There are also hopes that Davide Valsecchi will score his first points for the Barwa Addax Team and thus help the Spanish team to reach their highest objective.
Tomorrow should be an exciting race for all concerned and will start at 14.00 hrs local time.
