With an overwhelming gap over his rivals, Nelson A. Piquet scored the first pole position of the season in GP2 series, for race one of the opening round, to be held later today on the circuit Ricardo Tormo of Valencia in Spain. Tristan Gommendy and Lewis Hamilton joined the Brazilean in the top places.

Piquet, with a car of Piquet Sports, set 1m17s886 to lead the field in the first qualifying session of the year that defined the positions for race one of the weekend.

"It was hard to get a clear lap early on," Piquet said after the session, "but luckily I could get a good one behind Gommendy near the end. Everyone had traffic so I was a bit lucky, but the pace for everyone will be closer in the race."

French racer Gommendy will complete the front row after he clocked a laptime of 1m18s360. The driver of iSport International was the surprise of the session due as it was the first time since the pre-season tests starts that he reached the top places.

ART Grand Prix team had in Hamilton their best racer with the Brit taking third place and a time of 1m18s400. Hamilton showed the way during much time of the qualifying today but lost the chance to debut with the pole in the final part.

Local driver, Adrian Valles, put Campos Racing in a strong fourth position while both South American racers, Ernesto Viso and Jose Maria Lopez, completed the top six places.

The times throughout the grid were extremely tight, with one second covering the first 11 drivers and only two seconds blanketing 22 cars.

In the European afternoon, the first race of the season will take place for the GP2 series on the Spaniard racetrack of Valencia.
