The GP2 series teams started today it third test session at the French circuit of Paul Ricard on it road to the season opener of San Marino with Nelson A. Piquet setting the fastest lap and the news of two cars per team from now on.
In a sunny day, the Brazilian clocked 1:19.388 after 73 laps around the track located southern France. Piquet who won the British Formula 3 Championship last year, confirmed his condition of protagonist for the season that it is to come. "I was the quickest again and that`s good, because it shows my control on the car and that the team is in the right way", stated the son of the former F1 champion.
The Spaniard driver Borja García took second place in the machine of the Racing Engineering. García marked 1:19.780 although completed only half laps of Piquet only 37. García`s teammate, Neel Jani had a compicated day with the new car by ending on last place with two laps around the circuit.
Right behind García finished Scott Speed with a time of 1:19.793 in 40 laps. The North American driver tested a Formula 1 Red Bull a few days ago, as member of the team young drivers program. Speed`s job with the iSport International allows to wait with confidence the season start. Speed was the fastest after the second test disputed on March.
Fourth and fifth places were a matter of Latin American drivers. The good perfomance shown by the Venezuelan Ernesto Viso since the series started testing on February gives him good hopes for the qualifying of Wednesday that will difine the numbers for the year: "Our intention is to end ahead in the time sheet", commented Viso. On the other side, the Argentinian Juan Cruz Alvarez completed his best work so far with the fifth position. An engine problem put a quick end for Sergio Hernández, Alvarez`s teammate on Campos Racing. Hernández finished 23th. the journey, only ahead Jani.
The activity for the GP2 series will continue on the next two days. Wednesday will be, besides the qualifying moment, the official presentation of the category for the world press.
