The Durango team driver Cilvio Piccione came up with the victory in the thilling and entertaining GP2 Series sprint race today in Nurburgring, with Adam Carroll and Nelson A. Piquet taking the other podium places.

Piccione claimed his first victory in the series after another very interesting competition of the GP2 series. The 22-year-old Monagasque started the race from second place after a seventh-place finish yesterday. Piccione was a protagonist along with Piquet, Carroll and Nico Rosberg in a group that fought for places in the podium. Gianmaria Bruni fell out of the fight when he retired on lap 16th.

“It was amazing! I didn’t do a great start so I just drove my own race – I knew I had the pace from yesterday so I knew how good the car was, I just kept in the pack, and when I saw a few opportunities I grabbed them”, commented the winner when the action was over.

Indeed, when Piccione had an opportunity he took it. With eight laps completed Piccione was in a great battle with Rosberg and Giorgio Pantano for fourth position looking foward. “When there was a little mess with Nico, Piquet and Jani - I just went for it and did an amazing overtake on Jani around the outside, and from there on I was gone”

Piccione reached the podium for the first time this year in what seemed to be his greatest race ever. “It means a lot for me. We were quick in Monaco and we showed it, but I made a mistake in the race - we were quick again here and I’ve got my first win, so we just have to carry on like this”, stated the former British F3 driver.

Second place belonged to the Monaco winner last week. Carroll had a difficult race in the preview starting from 21st in the grid. But the talent of the Irish and the ovetake chances of the Nurburgring gave him the formula of a great result again. “It was a mega race – I think everybody enjoyed that! That’s what you call racing. It was just good, hard and clean racing”, mentioned the Super Nova driver.

The battle was thilling and hard during the 24 laps of competition. Carroll had to push from the very start to advance in the field. About his fight with Rosberg and Piquet, Carroll said: “I was struggling to pass them who were ahead battling for 2nd and 3rd position but then they both took the corner wide and I just slip past them into 2nd place”.

Carroll´s second place today is the biggest recovery of a driver in GP2, after a start from 21st place. “I just managed to use all the events of the race to my advantage, I over took nine cars on the first lap”, he said.

The Brazilian Piquet was the best between the Latin American drivers during the weekend. The British F3 current champion had an exciting race from his fourth place in the grid. Piquet had a wide start jumping to second place but losing it in a late brake. “"I could have won that race but I'm really happy I got the podium. I should have been second on the first lap but I braked too late and dropped back - if I had done that I would have won, but you learn from your mistakes”, he commented.

Piquet fought during all the race in the thilliing group of Neel Jani, Carroll, Rosberg and company, always very tight in the track. “It was a difficult race, there were so many cars close behind me and Jani was slow in front of me but he was difficult to overtake”.

The Piquet Sports driver took his second podium and good points for the standings where he is now on sixth place. “it's good that we scored points in both races this weekend and we move up a place in the championship”, he said. Although the victory is the targer for Piquet: “I'm just so anxious for the first win, it can't come soon enough for me."

Yesterday's winner and standings leader, Heikki Kovalainen, retired for the second time in the year, the first having been in Barcelona´s sprint race. The Finn left the race after a battle with his teammate, Nicolas Lapierre, in the second lap when they were fighting with José María López.

The drivers' championship still has Kovalainen as leader with 38 points. The battle behind him is hard as Scott Speed is at 29, followed by Carroll, 28; Bruni, 27 and Rosberg with 21 units.

In the teams' positions, Arden continues in the lead with 42 points followed close by Super Nova, 38; ART Grand Prix, 33; iSport International, 31 and Coloni Motorsport, 30.

Next round for GP2 will on July 2nd and 3rd at Magny-Cours circuit in France.
