Charles Pic took the GP2 feature race pole position in Abu Dhabi today, in the series' second visit to the Yas Marina Circuit. his first GP2 Series pole. It was no cakewalk for Pic, though, as Oliver Turvey trailed him by just two hundredths of a second at the end of the session.

"This was easier than the last time I drove here," Pic explained. "Back in November I had to learn the car and the track, but today I felt more comfortable. My engineer and I analysed my driving and we improved the car for the qualifying session."

GP2 championship leader David Valsecchi held the provisional pole for much of the session, but a late charge by Pic saw the 19-year-old Frenchman eclipse Valsecchi's time by just over a tenth of a second with a lap of 1:52.497.

"All the day we were competitive from free practice to qualifying," Valsecchi said, expressing his satisfaction. "Also my team mate Oliver is in second position so we have the performance so we hope tomorrow to finish on the podium."

After Pic took the pole away from Valsecchi, it got worst when his own iSport teammate, Turvey, also slipped by in the closing moments of the session, relegating Valsecchi to the second row.

"It was a good qualifying session, I was improving all the time, the track was getting better and I managed to set my best time on my last lap," Turvey recalled. "It was much better than last time obviously, I felt much more confident with the car so I'm looking forward to the race now."

Jules Bianchi took fourth place, though he and fifth-fastest qualifier, Alexander Rossi, were over three tenths back from the pole position, at 0.345 and 0.364 seconds, respectively.

Rossi's first GP2 qualifying appearance did not have a happy ending though, as his car failed to pass post-qualifying scrutineering, and his times were disallowed. The young American will now have to start the race from the back of the grid.
