DAMS SIGNS PERERA FOR THE 2006 GP2 CHAMPIONSHIP
LE MANS, 11th JANUARY, 2006 -- Young French driver Franck Perera has finalised today a contract with the DAMS GP2 Team for the 2006 season. He will join the Italian driver Ferdinando Monfardini in the French squad.
DAMS GP2 Team Owner, Jean Paul Driot, said, "I am really delighted to have Franck joining the team for this season and proud that Toyota Motorsport Managers grant their confidence to our team. He represents one of the greatest hopes for French Motorsport and I am happy to renew DAMS Tradition to race French drivers to the top level"
Franck Perera added "GP2 is the last step before F1 and DAMS was the best choice for me. They have a great history in Motorsport, the team is very competitive and, I look forward to racing with a French team again after so many years with Italian teams, dating right back to my kart days! The test in Paul Ricard this winter has been very important in preparing me for 2006. The result was good, we improved throughout the entire day and we instantly managed to be amongst the quickest guys of 2005. But the most important thing is that the relation between the team and me is perfect. I would also like to convey my pleasure at staying on the Toyota Young Drivers' Programme in 2006, what will be my sixth year as a Toyota young driver. They gave me the choice of team for this year and for me there was absolutely no doubt in my mind. DAMS were also quick to decide to work with me. When I tested with DAMS in the winter Ferdinando Monfardini was there too and he is a nice guy, our relation during this day was friendly and I think it is also very important to feel good with my team-mate. I want to thank Jean-Paul Driot and the team for their confidence and look forward to rewarding this confidence with great results with them this season."
Yoshinori Arimatsu, manager of TOYOTA Young Drivers Programme (TDP), "It is our pleasure to announce this new collaboration with the DAMS team. It is the first time that the TDP has placed one of its drivers into the GP2 Series. We have been seeking the best place to put our driver Franck Perera and we have found DAMS to be the best. We have been discussing about a possible tie-up with Jean-Paul Driot from the early stages, and after witnessing the evident chemistry between Franck and DAMS in just half a day of testing at Circuit Paul Ricard last December, we are convinced that this is the team where Franck should drive. We are hoping this chemistry develops into a befitting strong result in GP2 for both DAMS and Franck this year."
