Italian driver Giorgio Pantano achieved today the pole position for the GP2 series' sixth race, which will be held tomorrow on the Nurburgring circuit. Nico Rosberg and Heikki Kovalainen, second and third in the session, were penalized and the stewards took away their best two laps.
It was a result Pantano was waiting for: the perfect way to forget the three first rounds of the season and start all again in Germany. The pole position ment for Pantano his first two points in the GP2 season. "I'm very happy. I think all season people haven't seen what I can do because I had a few problems. But we have found a solution and I think everything is going well", commented the former F1 driver.
Pantano set a lap of 1:43.862 in the beginning of the qualifying session that had top 10 drivers closed within less than a second. "The car, everywhere on the circuit, was feeling very good. For sure experience helps at this circuit, but I think most of the other drivers have been here, not just me", said the Super Nova driver.
The 2002 F3000 sub-champion compared the GP2 cars with the F1 he drove last season: "The F1 experience helps as the GP2 series car is very similar for me. The braking point is the same, the feeling is the same, the speed through the fast corners is very high -- the only difference is the power".
Pantano has a clear aim and need for Saturday's competition: "Now we have to start from today. This is our first two points and tomorrow we have to win". Not an easy target, but possible.
When the activity was over for GP2, a surprise came out with the positions of Rosberg, Kovalainen and Alexandre Premat. According to the information, the three drivers set their fastest lap while part of the third sector of the track was under yellow flags. The stewards concluded to deleted the best two laps of each driver involved. The official grid for the race will be published tomorrow morning, explained the series sources.
