Clivio penalised by starter problems
The Sunday sprint race turned into another frustrating race for Clivio before it had even got underway. A problem with the starting lights on the grid meant the GP2 drivers had to complete two installation laps before finally getting underway with a rolling start. Clivio experienced problems with his starter and had to be pushed by his mechanics to get restarted.
In the opening laps, Clivio was engaged in an on-track battle with Can Artam and Yoshimoto eventually passing both drivers by lap 3. The Durango driver continued to plough his way through the field. Clivio piled pressure on Nelson Piquet Jnr before overtaking his old rival for 8th position on lap 5. He then went on to attack Alvarez before passing him two laps later.
On lap 9, Lapierre spun off track moving Clivio up to 6th position as the race reached its midway point. Two laps later, Clivio was called into the pits for a drive-through penalty incurred at the start for having his mechanics on the grid too late at the start of the race. Coming out of the pits, Clivio rejoined the action in 16th position.
In the latter half of the race, Clivio continued to show his determination and pulled up two positions before the end. On the final corners of the final lap he continued to attack Negrão but had to content himself with 14th place as he crossed the finish line.
"Another incredibly frustrating race to end the weekend. I stalled and had problems with my starter so the mechanics had to push me on the grid rather than start from the back of the field which gave me the drive-through penalty later on.
It's a real shame as I was doing really well in the first half of the race and got past Can Artam, Yoshimoto, Piquet Jnr and Alvarez early on. I was up to P6 when my team called me in for the drive-through penalty halfway through the race and that was really it for me. I came out in 16th but the gap to the others was huge by this point. Even though I knew I was out of the points, I tried to go as quick as possible and just before the end, I had Negrão in my sights but ran out of time before I could overtake him.
It's very frustrating to have two drive-through penalties in one weekend. The car was feeling strong today and I'm really disappointed we were unable to pick up any points here in Monza."
