PIC RECOVERS WELL AFTER DISASTROUS START

Charles Pic finished a spirited 11th in today's GP2 Series feature race at Monza -- and that was a better result than it might sound. The Frenchman was involved in a multi-car accident on the opening lap of the race and had to make a lengthy pit stop for repairs, including a replacement front wing. The time lost was partially compensated by two early Safety Car periods, but -- despite his speed and consistency -- further delays put him too far back to be able to challenge for points.

Team-mate Rodolfo Gonzalez had a disastrous afternoon. He lost control on the formation lap, while warming his tyres, and crashed before the race had even started.

Charles:

"I suffered a broken front wing during the traditional first-lap scramble -- and the damage punctured a front tyre, so I had no option but to pit. I was still a long way behind the Safety Car queue when the race restarted, so had no chance to catch the rest of the pack. I was able to do that when the second Safety Car came out, but then several cars collided ahead of me at the restart and it took about 30 seconds to pick my way through, so I was back where I started. On the positive side, though, our lap times were very competitive and we clearly had the pace, in ordinary circumstances, to score a good result. It was a difficult, chaotic race -- but I'm sure I can score points tomorrow, even though I'm starting only 11th."

Rodolfo:

"What can I say? I was simply trying to put heat into my tyres, as every driver does, when the car got away from me. I was taken completely unawares and clipped the barrier just hard enough to prevent me being able to start. I'll have to line up right at the back tomorrow, but Charles's pace today proved that our package is good and I will do my best to capitalise on that."
