ARDEN FACING TOUGH TEST AT TEMPLE OF SPEED

The penultimate round of the GP2 Series takes place this weekend at Monza, Europe's oldest active racetrack and the fastest circuit on the calendar. First used in 1922, it has altered relatively little over the years and its cocktail of long straights and tight chicanes tends to produce closely matched fields. That was the case in qualifying today, with less than one second covering the fastest 19 cars. Unfortunately, however, Arden duo Charles Pic and Rodolfo Gonzalez were at the wrong end of this tightly knit group. Pic lost vital preparation time when he crashed during this morning's free practice session: he will line up 16th, four places ahead of his team-mate.

Charles:

"Free practice didn't go too well -- I managed only three laps before locking the rear tyres and spinning off. That wasn't a great start... In qualifying, track conditions were at their best during the first run. I had tyre degradation problems at that stage, so we altered the set-up, but then the track deteriorated. In any case, my second run was interrupted by yellow flags, so it would have been very hard to improve. It was a bad qualifying session at the end of a bad day, but we will focus on getting things right tomorrow."

Rodolfo:

"Things have been tough today. I was quite unlucky with traffic on my second set of tyres, but I know I have the potential to go at least as well here as I did at Spa. If I get a good start tomorrow, and stay out of trouble for the first few laps, I think I'll be OK. There is often quite a high rate of attrition here, so I am confident another points finish is achievable."
