ADAM CARROLL ESCAPES HIGH SPEED DRAMA
WHEEL LOSS = RACE LOSS
GP2: RACE 1 -- MONZA, ITALY Great Britain's Adam Carroll escaped injury after a wheel came off at over 210 kilometres per hour at the high speed circuit of Monza. But to make matters worse, the Racing Engineering driver was effectively leading the race after pitting, with all the rest of the cars in front still needing to make their stop.
After a good pit-stop on lap 10 Carroll returned to the circuit and went quickest through the first two sectors but as he came out of the chicane to head down the long straight, the wheel came off and bounced down the circuit being followed by the out of control car which eventually came to a stop about 150 metres later between the barrier and the race track.
"As soon as I came out of the pit-stop I knew I had a good position but I could feel something not quite right but I didn't know what the problem was -- it could just have been a soft tyre but I'll definitely remember what it feels to drive with 3 wheels at that speed if it happens again. I'm just so relieved I didn't hit the wall. I was on the brakes the whole time I was spinning all over the track. I was so thankful when I came to a stop -- it could have been pretty serious."
The race went onto a thrilling finish and the race for the championship between Lewis Hamilton and Nelson Piquet Jr goes down to the final race of the season tomorrow.
