Monaco Race -- Perera takes brilliant 2nd place in Monaco
Franck Perera has scored today his first podium of the season after taking 2nd place of the most prestigious race of the GP2 season in Monaco. On the front row Franck took a clean start and kept his second position behind Hamilton. Immediately both drivers set a race pace than no one else could follow and confirmed their domination seen during Friday sessions. Lap after Lap Franck was increasing the gap over Piccione and was keeping contact with the leader at the same time. On lap 13 as he was loosing a little bit of time over Hamilton the team decided to stop him for the tyre change. He went back on track on 6th position but got back to 2nd place quickly as the cars in front of him stopped as well. Hamilton did the same on lap 15 and saw his advantage over Perera reduced from 8 to 3 seconds when he returned on track. Both drivers spent the rest of the race together, with a gap not exceeding 6 seconds and being the 2 fastest cars on track they left the rest of the field far! away behind.
Ferdinando Monfardini was very close today to make another big come back in the points like Barcelona. Coming in the first corner after the start he managed to avoid the crash and the debris and gained 8 places in the 1st lap. A wheel nut problem during the pit stop probably cost him some points as he lost 3 seconds and retuned on race just behind a group of 5 cars fighting for 6th place. Ferdinando was faster and tried to pass Ammermueller in the braking of the chicane of the port, but he locked his wheels and cut the chicane which is sanctioned by a stop & go penalty. He crossed the finish line just out of the points in 9th position.
Franck Perera : "We wanted points and now the job is done, I am delighted with this result which we deserved, we had several opportunities to show that we are quick and finally we have been rewarded. I just did a clean race, I could stay on the rhythm of Hamilton but today it would have been crazy to try something, I have been quickly focused on preserving my second place and score these points that I was excepting for so long! We need to continue like that, I feel so good with the team and they do a fantastic job. Lewis was strong this weekend but I have no doubt that we can win races as well soon!"
Ferdinando Monfardini : "It is a shame, it has been close to make another finish in the points from 20th position on the grid. I spent quite a lot of time behind Ammermueler and I decided to pass him, but it did not work. One more time I have lost a lot in qualifying this weekend and our pace was excellent in race, we have to work hard on using new tires and the package will be then quite competitive."
