Practicing for the Air Show
A typical Monaco first corner incident at Sainte Devote put a stop to Christian Bakkerud's sprint race today. Whilst lifting off the throttle to avoid a car that was squeezing him towards the guard-rail, Christian lost down force and didn't manage to avoid the car in front which sent him flying up in the air and he only come to a complete stop when he reached the tyre wall. This spectacular incident saw Christian's car fly several feet up in to the air before crashing down with terminal damage to the front end of the car but fortunately without causing any injury to the hard-trying Dane.
An obviously very disappointed Christian commented on his very short race -- "It wasn't exactly what I had planned for today. However, this is very typical of the Monaco street circuit as we are 26 cars storming down to the very tight first corner with no room for mistakes. Andreas Zuber who was behind me got a fantastic start and as he had to move across to avoid other cars colliding in front of him I then in turn had to lift off to avoid him but ended up losing grip. This meant that I just couldn't stop in time to avoid the other car ahead of me so my car went up in the air. Fortunately I landed with one wheel at a time so to speak and didn't hit the ground with all four wheels at the same time which as I'm sure you everyone can image have a huge impact on your body and back which in my case would have been disastrous. I can't feel any pain or any other problems from my back so I think I got away lightly this time. I don't blame anyone for what happened, it was simply a racing incident."
"Now it's time to look forward to my next outing in the car which will be on the 8th June at the Karup Air Show where I'm going to race against an F16 fighter jet which I'm sure will be the race of my life!"
