MIKE CONWAY BACK BEHIND THE WHEEL IN PREPARATION FOR GP2 SEASON

23 February 2007./Mike Conway, one of Britain's leading young race drivers, completed the first official test session of the 2007 GP2 Series this week at the Paul Ricard circuit in France, running competitively throughout the two days of track action, finishing 11th at the end of the second day, less than half a second off the lead driver.

Driving for the Super Nova team, Conway is the only British driver contesting the championship, which supports the FIA Formula One World Championship at 11 international race venues from April to September.

Conway tested with the team at the end of 2006, and this was his first outing in the GP2 car this year. A rookie to the Series, the 22 year old driver is competing against a mixed field of experienced GP2 returnees and racers new to the Series. He graduates to this prestigious championship on the back of a highly successful 2006 season. He was crowned champion of the British F3 International Series in September driving with Raikkonnen Robertson Racing taking ten pole positions and ten victories to secure him the title. He followed this by winning the Macau F3 Grand Prix, a blue-riband international single seater race event.

The Kent racer said after the two-day test, "It was good to be back in the car again and starting to get on with the preparations for the new season. On the first morning we ran 30 laps with a best lap time within a second of the leading driver. In the afternoon the weather changed and with drizzling rain creating a damp track, we only put in seven laps, so our times weren't particularly representative of our pace.

"On the second day, running on a different configuration of the Paul Ricard circuit, we made good progress, although we didn't make the most of the new tyres. But I don't think any conclusions can be drawn from this test as everyone is focusing on their own development programmes. It was great to be able to get used to working with the Super Nova crew and the engineers this week, and it hasn't taken long for us to start gelling, which is so important.

"I'm now looking forwards to the next test in Barcelona early next month. I haven't driven this circuit and as the second race weekend of the season is at this venue, it will be an important test for us."

Conway returns to the track for further pre-season testing in two weeks time in Barcelona. A further test is set for mid-March and the opening weekend of GP2 kicks off in Bahrain from 13 - 15 April.
