Racing return for GP2 series in France
The GP2 series returns from a month's break this weekend as our twelve teams reconvene for races eight and nine at Circuit Nevers Magny-Cours in France. With all 24 drivers eager to get their championship aspirations back on track following the closest of test sessions at Circuit Paul Ricard in mid-June, expectations are high for yet another thrilling weekend of racing.
What about the championship? With a third of the season behind us, Heikki Kovalainen (Arden International) leads the championship standings on 38 points. Scott Speed (iSport International, 29pts) Adam Carroll (Super Nova International, 28pts) and Gimmi Bruni (Coloni Motorspor t, 27pts) are battling for second place. All three will be eager to cut the gap to Heikki this weekend. In the battle for the teams' championship Arden International hold first place with 42 points, ahead of Super Nova International (38 points,) ART Grand Prix (33 points,) iSport International (31 points) and Coloni Motorsport (30 points.)
Legends drive GP2. This week four former Formula One drivers were invited to Circuit Paul Ricard to test drive the GP2 series development car.1996 Formula One World Champion Damon Hill joined Jacques Laffite, Adrian Campos and Patrick Tambay in the south of France. The drivers used the 3.793km "3A" track solution of the circuit. They completed 52 laps between them and were pleasantly surprised with their experience.
A full gallery of images from this week's test at Circuit Paul Ricard is now available online, featuring shots of Damon, Jacques, Adrian and Patrick in action.
The GP2 series will once again host its Thursday night rendez-vous this weekend in Magny-Cours. It will be a chance to catch up with our drivers and teams after the month break, and we would, as always, be delighted to welcome all our friends of the media.
