Jolyon Palmer ends Monaco weekend on a high

British GP2 racer impresses on first visit to iconic street circuit

West Sussex GP2 driver Jolyon Palmer impressed on his first ever visit to the famous Monaco circuit last weekend securing a best result of 11th after mechanical issues had deprived him of an earlier top 10 finish in race one.

20-year-old Jolyon from Southwater, racing in his first season of the Formula One feeder series, was on course for his second top 10 finish of the season during the weekend’s opening Feature Race until his race was cruelly cut short when his car suffered brake failure with 10 laps to go.

Jolyon, son of former F1 driver Jonathan who raced at the same circuit in the 1980s, bounced back though for the second race of the sun-soaked weekend, climbing through the field from 17th on the gird and making up six places on his way to 11th place.

Both races saw Jolyon, who finished as runner-up in the FIA Formula Two Championship last year, have to overcome heavy traffic as well as high tyre degradation on the tight, twisty 3.340km Circuit de Monaco.

Speaking after the weekend the Arden International driver said: “Race one was disappointing as we had got up to 10th place at one stage until I encountered a problem with my brakes with about 10 laps to go, forcing me to pit again. It is a shame because we had good pace and I was on course for a top 10 finish.

“I got a good start in race two and made up a place going into the Mirabeau hairpin. From then on I got held up in traffic but I stayed consistent and when a gap presented itself I had the pace to get past. 11th place is a decent result for me, especially after the disappointment in the first race and I’m already looking forward to the next rounds in Valencia.”

The next rounds of the 2011 GP2 series take place in Valencia, Spain on 24-26 June with full cover of the race weekend available on Jolyon's official website.
