Spin ends Clivio's chance of a points finish

Clivio had pulled up to 7th position when he spun into the gravel 10 laps from the end of the 34 lap race at the Istanbul Park circuit. Clivio fell victim to the same corner that took out seven times World Champion Michael Schumacher in the Formula 1 Qualifying session earlier the same day.

Having started the race in 20th position Clivio pulled up to P16 by the end of the first lap, then profited from the first of two Safety Car phases to pit for new tyres on lap 2. Clivio drove a determined race progressing steadily through the field and by lap 13 he overtook championship leader Kovalainen for 9th position. An on track battle on lap 16 involving Lauda, Garcia, Clivio, Lapierre and Bruni, resulted in Lapierre's retirement and triggered the second Safety Car phase. As the Safety car came in Speed attacked and overtook Clivio for 6th. With 10 laps to go in an on track battle with Alvarez, Clivio was caught out by some oil on track and spun into the gravel on turn 9.

Clivio:

"I got away to a good start and there was a lot of action in the first lap with positions changing corner by corner. We had changed a lot on the car overnight and it felt really different. It took me a couple of laps to get used to it but it was much better and I was able to really attack through the field. I made moves on quite a lot of the drivers including Lapierre, Kovalainen and Bruni, it was a good action-packed race.

By the second Safety Car phase I was up to 6th position, then Speed caught me. I kept close behind him, I was happy with the car and able to equal his pace. On lap 23 I was battling with Alvarez through a few corners. I think I picked up some oil on turn 1, then as I approached turn 9 I just lost the car. It spun very suddenly and there was nothing I could do, it was totally unexpected.

It is a very fast track and it is very dirty off the line, which is why there were so many spins on track today.

So another very tough race. On the one hand it is positive to know we show such pace in the race, but we need to find the same pace in Qualifying. If I can pull up from 20th to 6th in the race, just think what I could do if I qualified in the top six!

I showed my stuff but came away again with nothing - and that is hard!"
