BARWA ADDAX TEAM DRIVERS CHANGE PLACES AT THE TOP OF DRIVERS CHAMPIONSHIP
Vitaly Petrov has taken over as new leader of the GP2 Series after having passed the chequered flag in third place this morning, at the Istanbul Park circuit in Turkey, and a position once more on the winner's rostrum. Romain Grosjean has dropped to second behind his Russian team mate after having failed to score any points in today's race. The Barwa Addax Team continues to dominate the class in all categories.
The Russian driver has had a fantastic weekend, after having driven a superb second race where he fought back from his eighth place start to finish third on the winner's rostrum. In doing so he beat all his closest rivals on the track. Climbing five places from eighth to third, in this the shorter sprint race, is testimony of the talent and hard work carried out by both Vitaly Petrov and his team. After yesterday's wonderful exhibition he has now climbed to the top of the overall drivers championship. He becomes the first Russian driver in the history of this event to lead the championship. It seems along with his team mate that Vitaly is now one of the possible Formula 1 drivers of the future.
It has not been Romain Grosjean's weekend. However he shown signs of his true class today, starting from the back of the grid in 26th position and finishing in a meritorious 12th, after having made a great fightback, particularly in the early laps. This brave effort is even better when one considers that he had no chance of getting into the points and defend his overall lead in the championship. Not for the first time this season Grosjean gave us more thrilling moments in this race than any of his rivals. Unfortunately, after one incident with a rival, he was left with the nose of the car damaged and this consequently limited his options.
Barwa Addax Team once again is confirming its dominance in the GP2 Series. It isn't just a question of the insulting superiority of their drivers, who seem to be fighting out the spoils between themselves, but also behind the scenes. The team as a whole is on a different plain to the rest. Starting with the management, the drivers, the work of the engineers, the technicians, mechanics and the rest of the components that make up the team. Its also important to note that on today's winners rostrum, not only was there a Spanish driver but also cars from two Spanish teams, which demonstrates the good work and growing potential we can find today in Spanish motorsport.
Romain Grosjean concedes his lead to his team mate in the overall rankings and remains on 31 points, two points behind his team mate Vitaly Petrov on 33 points with the third placed driver on 18 points. Barwa Addax Team dominates the race for the team title on 64 points, 30 points clear of their closest rival.
The next round of the GP2 Series will take place at the Silverstone circuit in England for the British Grand Prix, the weekend of the 20th and 21st of June.
