Round 5 of the GP2 Series kicked off in the streets of Monaco yesterday, a circuit which is a firm favorite for the iSport team and drivers.
Jolyon Palmer had a great start to the day, taking P5 in Free Practice, with Marcus Ericsson finishing in P12.
The afternoon’s Qualifying session saw the drivers split into two groups, with each driver out on the track for 14 minutes each. Palmer took to the grid first, competing with the likes of Van der Garde and Chilton. Out on the Super Soft Option tyres, the iSport driver made a great start, improving on lap times quickly, and continued to keep a good pace throughout the session, ending the short session in P3.
The second Qualifying session saw Marcus Ericsson up against Razia and the current leader, Valsecchi. Ericsson got off to a flying start, continuously improving his pace during the opening laps, eventually taking P1, where he stayed for the majority of the session. With only minutes to go, Gonzalez collided with a barrier, resulting in a red flag and a restart. With one lap remaining, Ericsson was cruelly piped to the post by Cecotto, by just 0.054.
Paul Jackson – Team Principal “Great to finally have a trouble free run and have both drivers fighting for the top spots on the grid. An excellent team performance all round and just reward for all the hard work everyone has put in. Now we need an equally trouble free race and make the most of our start positions.”
Today’s Feature Race will see both drivers at the top of the grid, with Ericsson 3rd and Palmer 6th, a great place to be in for the team.
